05 March 2017- Local Government Units in Surigao del Norte conduct Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDNA) after the magnitude 5.9 earthquake which hit the Province today.
At around 8AM this morning, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit Surigao City. PHIVOLCS reported that this is an aftershock of the magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Surigao City which happened few weeks ago.
Intensity 6 was recorded in Surigao City, intensity 4 in Limasawa and San Ricardo in Southern Leyte, intensity 3 in San Juan and San Francisco, Southern Leyte and Intensity 2 in General Luna, Surigao del Norte.
Based on initial reports gathered, eighty-three (83) houses were damaged in Surigao City and Sison, Surigao del Norte due to the earthquake. Five (5) of which were totally damaged while seventy-eight (78) were partially damaged.
Power was restored in the entire Province of Surigao del Norte as of 1PM today.
One was reported injured due to a collapsed wall of the IFI Chapel in Cabunga-an, Cagdiano, Dinagal Islands. The victim was referred to Surigao City Health Facility for further medical treatment.
Regional DRRM Council Caraga is continuously coordinating with the LGUs conducting RDNA to assess other effects incurred because of the strong earthquake.
The National DRMM Council reminded the public to stay alert and be prepared for aftershocks.
“We cannot predict when will an earthquake happen, that’s why we need to prepare. Let us take time to strengthen our houses and plan with our families for everbody’s safety,” said Usec Ricardo B Jalad
Programs and activities on earthquake preparedness are being conducted nationwide through the National and Regional DRRM Councils.
