Search, Rescue and Retrieval (SRR) operations intensify in the collapsed Southern Trade Commercial Store in Padada, Davao del Sur in the aftermath of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake. The earthquake with epicenter in Matanao, Davao del Sur struck on 15 December 2019 at 2:11 PM, with intensities ranging from Intensity II to VII causing damages to weak houses and buildings. Six (6) persons were already rescued through the SRR efforts of the Bureau of Fire (BFP) Region 11 with support from the Special Response Units of other BFP ROs in Regions 12 and BARMM as well as Disaster Response Units (DRUs) of the 73rd Inf Bn, 10ID and 512nd Engineering Construction Bn, both of the Philippine Army. Three (3) fatalities were likewise recovered from the said collapsed commercial building.

Undersecretary Ricardo Jalad, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Administrator and National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Executive Director, visited Davao del Sur and conferred with mayors Pedro Caminero Jr and Arthur D. Davin of the municipalities of Padada and Magsaysay, respectively. Both mayors appealed for assistance in terms of relief goods like food, drinking water and shelter materials for families affected especially the displaced and those with damaged houses. OCD R11 yesterday facilitated the initial delivery of 2,650 liters of bottled drinking water, rice, and other items such as tarpaulins and sakolines to Padada municipality. DSWD likewise is facilitating delivery of food packs and tents. Also discussed were the on-going SRR efforts in Padada and resettlement of displaced families in Magsaysay.

To further intensify the SRR efforts in Padada, additional rescue teams from NCR with appropriate life detection equipment and K9 elements were coordinated for immediate deployment. As of today, a total of 321 personnel from the BFP,PNP,AFP,PRC,Davao City 911,and LDRRMOs of Padada and Davao del Sur are involved in the SRR with ten (10) ambulances and nine (9) rescue vehicles. The SRR is being led by BFP Regional Director Fred Trajeras and closely supervised by Mayor Caminero and the Municipal Local DRRM Office.

Regional Director Manny Ochotorena of OCD Region 11 and OIC Provincial Director, Police Colonel Lupaz of Davao del Sur PPO jointly reported to USec Jalad that as of the latest count, 7 persons were already accounted as dead and 86 are injured from the earthquake. The fatalities are broken down as follows: Matanao- 1, Magsaysay- 1, Hagonoy-1, Bansalan- 1, and Padada- 3

The following municipalities reported bringing to hospitals and health centers a total of 86 persons for treatment of injuries they sustained from the earthquake: Bansalan– 5, Digos- 35, Hagonoy- 3, Kiblawan- 1, Magsaysay- 14, Matanao- 4, and Padada- 24

The earthquake also damaged six (6) vehicles broken as follows: 1 motorcycle, 4 tricycles, and 1 four-wheeled vehicle.
