The Office of Civil Defense - National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council held "#BidaAngHanda: Talk on Earthquake Preparedness and other Geological Hazards" on March 4, 2020 from 10 a.m to 1:30 p.m for media practitioners and information officers as part of pre-activities for the 2020 1st Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill.
Morning session discussions were Understanding Earthquake and Other Geological Hazards by Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Geologist Jeffrey Perez and DRRM Preparedness Efforts: Introduction to Assessment Tools, Priority Activities and Projects as well as NDRRMC Information Management Procedure discussed by OCD - Capacity Building and Training Service Information Officer Rachelle Miranda.
Perez noted the importance of individual participation in ensuring preparedness, ending his talk with this message: “Be involved. Disaster preparedness is everyone’s business. You can be a victim if you do not prepare.”
Meanwhile, in the afternoon session, NDRRMC Spokesperson Mark Timbal discussed the Role of Media in DRRM Application. This was followed by a short tour inside the NDRRMC Operations Center.
The orientation aimed to increase awareness of media personnel on earthquake, volcanic and other geologic hazards that are necessary in raising public awareness, support, and participation in DRRM efforts.
