The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and the Office of Civil Defense express gratitude to stakeholders and the public for supporting the “first ever online Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED)” and its related activities.
“Nagpapasalamat kami sa suporta ng taumbayan at kapwa ahensya ng pamahalaan para sa matagumpay na paglulunsad ng mga aktibidad at programa ng NSED. Laging mahalaga ang inyong suporta at patuloy na pakikibahagi.” OCD Administrator Undersecretary Ricardo Jalad said.
As the country deals with the COVID-19 pandemic, the NDRRMC through OCD launched alternative activities for the 3rd Quarter NSED to continuously promote earthquake preparedness.
OCD conducted the 3rd Quarter NSED via online ceremonial pressing of the button on September 10. The public was encouraged to watch the live stream and perform the “duck, cover, and hold” procedure in their respective places as the alarm siren sounded at 2 p.m. More than 4,000 people watched the whole live stream and posted photos of doing the “duck, cover, and hold.”
A webinar was also held on September 8, where Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Usec. Renato Solidum discussed understanding earthquake hazards in the Philippines, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Usec. Jonathan Malaya tackled community earthquake preparedness and response strategies, and OCD Director Susana Juangco shared earthquake preparedness efforts and initiatives. The webinar which aims to reinforce knowledge on earthquake preparedness had recorded 49 thousand views as of today.
An online quiz bee on earthquake basic concepts, events, and preparedness measures was also held on September 7 which recorded 6,700 facebook comments, reactions, and shares. Winners of the quiz bee received PHP300 to PHP1,000 worth of load cards.
The 4th Quarter NSED is set to happen on November 12 as part of the observance of World Tsunami Awareness. Activities for the upcoming NSED will be announced on the Civil Defense PH Facebook page.
