OCD CAR facilitated the conduct of Basic DRRM Training Course or DRRM101 for Public School Teachers in Ifugao. The course aims to stimulate DRRM and climate change awareness among public and private sectors. This is also for the trainees to develop deeper understanding on the Philippine DRRM Act of 2010 or RA10121 including four thematic areas of disaster management and to give them idea about the disaster risk profile of the country.

DRRM101 includes topics on climate change, disaster risk assessment, disaster control groups in schools, introduction to Incident Command System, and earthquake preparedness including topic on how to conduct earthquake drill in schools. Participants were also taught on basic first aid and handling of injured victims.

“This training is very timely since we want to optimize our level of preparedness and awareness” said Ms. Rebecca Bumahit, Ifugao Provincial DRRM Officer.

Teachers believed that the course is beneficial for them as educational institutions integrate DRRM in school curricula. “We used to be reactive to disasters. Now, we are doing our best to be proactive” said Teacher Eva.

This is the second DRRM101 led by OCD CAR in which the pilot test was conducted at Baguio City High School last April and was participated by approximately 80 teachers in Baguio and Benguet.

“We believe that teachers play a great role in achieving disaster resilience. Educating and informing the public is one way of preparing them for the worst-case scenarios” stressed OCD Cordillera Regional Director Andrew Alex Uy.

OCD Cordillera continues to provide technical assistance to public and private sectors on disaster management topics. Other skills and management capacity building courses like Incident Command System, Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis, and Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue trainings are scheduled the following months.
